What will happen during the first counselling session?

Typically, the first session is a time during which you tell your story to the counsellor.  The first session usually also brings opportunity to talk about solutions and at least the first steps toward resolution.

How long will counselling take?

Everyone is different and every situation is different, but it is quite common for people to attend between two and eight counselling sessions.  Even one session is valuable for initiating change.

How often would I come for counselling?

This is something that you would work out with your counsellor.  Initially, it is best to schedule weekly or bi-weekly appointments. Once the counselling begins to show results, the appointments can be scheduled every three or four weeks.  This gives you time to make progress outside of the counselling sessions.

Will everything be held confidential?

Everything that is shared during a counselling session is confidential.  There are only a few exceptions when the counsellor is legally obligated to disclose information.  These exceptions are generally:

  • if there is physical or sexual abuse of a child under the age of 18.
  • if there is reason to believe a person's life is in jeopardy.
  • if a judge subpoenas a counsellor to testify in court or to release the contents of a file.
